How do you design reusable components for an AI portal?
Reuse is most valuable when components represent stable interface concepts. A component should simplify repeated behavior rather than hide unrelated features behind many switches.
Find recurring patterns
Examples include a project card, status badge, generation form field, artifact preview, and error message. Define the data each component receives and the actions it exposes. Keep provider-specific response parsing outside visual components so the UI depends on an application model.
Specify variants and behavior
Include loading, empty, disabled, error, and ready states where relevant. Use consistent spacing, typography, and focus behavior. Avoid duplicating business rules such as authorization in several buttons; the server remains authoritative. Exercise components with long titles, missing thumbnails, and narrow layouts. Extract a shared component after the repeated pattern is clear rather than forcing every screen into an overly general abstraction.
