What does it mean to train a neural network?

Understand how neural networks learn from examples through predictions, loss, gradients, and parameter updates, and why validation matters.

What does it mean to train a neural network?

Training a neural network means adjusting its numerical parameters so that it performs a chosen task better on examples. Developers specify the architecture, data, and objective; the training process searches for useful parameter values. The network does not receive a separate handwritten rule for every situation.

The prediction and feedback loop

Consider a model that predicts whether a support message describes a delivery problem. It receives a message, computes a prediction, and compares that prediction with a training label. A loss function turns the mismatch into a number.

Backpropagation calculates how the loss changes with each parameter. An optimizer then uses those gradients to update the parameters. Repeating this cycle across batches of examples can make useful patterns influence predictions more strongly.

What learning should achieve

A successful model should recognize a new message such as “My parcel still hasn't arrived,” even if that exact sentence never appeared in training. This ability is called generalization.

Improvement on training examples alone is insufficient. A network might memorize particular messages or rely on misleading shortcuts, such as one customer's name appearing frequently beside a label.

How training is evaluated

Engineers reserve validation data to compare training choices and use separate test data for a final assessment. They monitor both loss and task-specific measures, such as the fraction of delivery complaints detected.

Training therefore combines numerical optimization with careful evaluation. Lowering an objective is useful only when the resulting behavior matches the intended task.

Usually, answering a question uses existing parameters. Updating those parameters requires a separate training procedure, although a product may independently store conversation history or collect feedback.

An epoch is one complete pass through a training dataset. Large language model training may also be described by tokens processed or optimization steps.

Separate test data helps estimate performance on examples the model has not optimized against. Reusing test answers during development makes that estimate less trustworthy.
