How does adjusting parameters improve an AI model’s predictions?
Adjusting parameters changes the mathematical function a model computes. Training seeks changes that reduce a defined loss over examples. A useful update can make the model assign more probability to appropriate outputs and less to alternatives that conflict with its training targets.
A small example of an update
Suppose a toy model predicts a value using prediction = weight × input. With input 2 and weight 1, its prediction is 2. If the target is 6, the current prediction is too small.
For squared error, the loss is (prediction − target)². The gradient with respect to the weight is negative at this point, so a sufficiently small gradient-descent update increases the weight. A weight closer to 3 produces a prediction closer to the target.
Large networks coordinate many changes
An LLM has many interacting parameters rather than a single weight. Backpropagation efficiently calculates gradients through those interactions, and an optimizer determines the updates.
A change that helps one example may hurt another. Training therefore usually works with batches and repeated updates, seeking a useful compromise across many contexts rather than perfecting one sentence.
Improvement must transfer to new inputs
Reducing training loss does not establish that the model became more truthful or more useful. It may learn repeated errors in the data or overfit familiar examples.
Engineers evaluate representative unseen inputs and task-specific outcomes. Parameter updates become valuable when those evaluations show better behavior, not merely because an optimizer completed more steps.
No. Parameters are shared across examples, so an update can improve some predictions while worsening others. Training aims to improve an aggregate objective.
Gradients describe local behavior around current parameter values. Very large steps can move beyond the region where that information predicts a useful direction.
Yes. Some adaptation methods train selected parameters or add small trainable components. Their usefulness depends on the task and the evaluation results.
