What role does a PRD play in AI-assisted development?
Understand how a PRD gives AI assistants shared product context, connects features to user needs, and supplies criteria for reviewing generated work.
What role does a PRD play in AI-assisted development?
A Product Requirements Document, or PRD, describes the problem a product should solve, the people it serves, and the behavior expected from its features. In AI-assisted development, it gives successive conversations a shared reference instead of relying on assumptions or scattered chat history.
Explain the product before requesting code
For a wedding-management application, the PRD could identify organizers, collaborators, and invited guests. It should explain their goals and define the initial scope: perhaps event management, assigned tasks, and event-specific RSVPs.
Include important exclusions as well. If payment collection is outside the first release, saying so helps prevent an assistant from building checkout screens simply because they appear common in similar products.
A PRD should focus on required outcomes. It can record constraints, but detailed database schemas and implementation choices usually belong in linked technical documents.
Turn requirements into reviewable behavior
A statement such as “support invitations” is too broad. A stronger requirement explains who can send an invitation, what the guest receives, when the invitation expires, and what happens when it is reused.
Acceptance criteria make this behavior checkable. For example: an organizer can see the RSVP for each invited event, while a guest cannot view another guest’s response.
Give the assistant the relevant requirement and ask it to explain how its planned changes satisfy those criteria.
Keep the document aligned with decisions
An AI-generated PRD is a draft that may contain invented assumptions, duplicate features, or omitted edge cases. Review it with the people responsible for the product.
As implementation and user feedback reveal new information, revise the PRD deliberately. Record changed decisions and update affected designs, tests, and prompts so the document remains useful.
Provide access to the current PRD and point to the sections relevant to the task. Highlight essential constraints explicitly so a small implementation request retains the correct product context.
A PRD records the team’s current understanding; it does not prove that understanding is correct. User interviews, observation, and product feedback can expose assumptions that the document must address.
It gives the reviewer expected actors, permissions, outcomes, and failure behavior. The reviewer can compare the implementation with those requirements instead of judging only whether the screen looks complete.
