How can AI assist with database and API design?

AI can help translate product requirements into draft data models and API contracts. It makes options and omissions easier to discuss: which records exist, how they relate, which operations users need, and what should happen when those operations fail.

Start with workflows and ownership

Suppose organizers create weddings, each wedding contains events, and invited guests submit event-specific RSVPs. Ask AI to identify candidate entities and relationships from those workflows before proposing tables or document collections.

The API should express approved product behavior rather than expose unrestricted access to every database field.

Challenge and verify the proposal

Have AI trace sample journeys through the design and look for missing constraints. Then review those findings with query patterns, privacy needs, and data changes in mind.

Choose indexes based on demonstrated access patterns, and validate assumptions with representative data as the app develops. Generated diagrams and endpoint lists are useful drafts, but correctness depends on their agreement with the product and implementation.
