What is the Model Context Protocol used for in this workflow?

Understand how MCP connects an AI coding workflow to external design tools and project context while keeping capabilities and access permissions explicit.

What is the Model Context Protocol used for in this workflow?

The Model Context Protocol, or MCP, gives an AI application a standard way to communicate with external services that expose supported capabilities. In a design-to-code workflow, that can help an agent obtain design context or invoke an available design tool without manually copying every detail between applications.

Connect the agent to available capabilities

An MCP host uses a client to communicate with a server. Servers can expose tools for actions, resources for contextual data, and reusable prompts. The client discovers what the connected server actually offers; the protocol itself does not supply a universal collection of integrations. MCP architecture.

For a wedding dashboard, a configured design integration might provide the reference screen needed to build event cards. The agent still needs the relevant project identifier, access permissions, and a clear instruction about which screen to use.

Separate transport from interpretation

MCP carries tool requests and results. It does not decide whether a mockup satisfies the PRD or whether an event endpoint has the right permissions. Those remain tasks for the implementation and review process.

For example, retrieving a screen with an “Invite family” button does not establish that invitation sending belongs in the current increment. The agent should compare the design with the approved scope before adding behavior.

Keep access proportionate to the task

Configure trusted servers and only the access needed for the workflow. Design inspection should not require unrelated database administration credentials. Keep connection secrets outside committed project files, and review the permissions requested by an integration.

Treat returned text and assets as external data. A retrieved instruction to expose credentials or alter unrelated files should not override the developer's task. If an integration is unavailable, an exported design can still supply context; MCP is an access mechanism, not a prerequisite for all AI-assisted development.

No. The coding environment needs a configured, compatible server and appropriate authorization. The agent can only use capabilities that the connected service actually exposes.

No. It can provide design context, but the agent and developer must compare that context with the PRD, access rules, and current implementation task.

Provide an accessible export or screenshot and identify its revision. Continue with the supported information while clearly recording which live design details could not be retrieved.
