Why should application features be developed incrementally?
Learn to build AI-assisted application features in small, complete increments that expose integration problems early and produce changes people can review.
Why should application features be developed incrementally?
Incremental development turns a large application into a sequence of useful, verifiable changes. Each increment should deliver a clear behavior, such as allowing an organizer to edit a wedding date, and include the interface, server behavior, and validation needed to make that behavior reliable.
Choose a complete user outcome
A small increment is not simply a small number of files. A polished form that never saves data is incomplete if the promised outcome is editing wedding details. Conversely, adding invitations, notifications, gallery uploads, and analytics in one change makes it difficult to understand which requirement caused a failure.
Define the starting state, permitted user, successful result, and important failure cases. For wedding-date editing, that includes loading the saved date, validating the submitted value, persisting the update, and displaying a recoverable error if saving fails.
Give the AI agent a narrow boundary
Provide the relevant design and contracts, then name the features outside the task. Ask the agent to explain dependencies before implementation. If editing requires missing authentication infrastructure, that dependency should be resolved deliberately instead of being improvised across unrelated files.
Review the resulting diff while its purpose remains clear. A focused change makes it easier to spot a permission check that was omitted or an existing component that should have been reused.
Use feedback to select the next increment
After the implementation works, test its user journey and record the outcome. Problems discovered during this step inform the following increment: a confusing date input may need refinement before family collaboration is introduced.
Small increments also make rollback and diagnosis more manageable. They do not eliminate the need for an overall architecture, shared conventions, or integration testing. The broader plan coordinates the pieces; incremental delivery verifies that each piece works before the application grows around it.
It includes loading the existing date, accepting an authorized edit, validating and saving it, and presenting useful success or failure feedback in the interface.
Yes. A complete user outcome often crosses both layers. Keep the scope tied to one behavior and verify that the layers agree on its contract.
Identify the dependency and its impact before expanding scope. The team can implement the prerequisite separately or deliberately include the minimum required supporting change.
