Why should architectural decisions be discussed with AI before generating the final document?

Use an architectural discussion with AI to expose assumptions, compare alternatives, and record reasons before producing a polished technical document.

Why should architectural decisions be discussed with AI before generating the final document?

Discussing architectural decisions before requesting a final document gives you a chance to challenge assumptions while changes are still inexpensive. A well-formatted document can look authoritative even when its underlying decisions do not fit the product.

Use conversation to uncover missing constraints

Begin with the product requirements, team capabilities, deployment expectations, and current uncertainties. Ask the assistant to identify information it needs before recommending components.

For a wedding-management app, useful questions include whether guests need accounts, whether organizers manage several weddings, and whether invitations must be sent immediately. Each answer influences identity, data relationships, and delivery responsibilities.

Compare alternatives through actual workflows

Select a few important decisions and discuss their consequences. For example, compare sending invitation emails inside a request with recording a delivery job for later processing. Consider failure handling, duplicate sends, user feedback, and operational effort.

Ask for the strongest reason against the proposed approach as well as the reason for it. Require the assistant to separate verified constraints from assumptions and open questions. This makes the discussion easier for a developer to evaluate.

Turn agreed decisions into a useful record

Once the main choices are clear, request the architecture document using a consistent structure: context, components, data flows, access rules, deployment, risks, and unresolved items. Include the reasoning behind choices instead of listing technologies alone.

Review the generated document for decisions that were never agreed. Keep unresolved questions visible rather than letting confident prose conceal them. The document becomes an initial baseline for implementation, with room for revision as prototypes and real usage provide evidence. Discussion improves the quality of that baseline; it does not eliminate the need to test it.

Settle the main product constraints, ownership boundaries, access model, and important technology choices. Open questions can remain, provided the document labels them rather than inventing answers.

Ask it to describe failure scenarios, identify unsupported assumptions, and compare a simpler alternative against the same requirements. Require concrete consequences rather than general claims of scalability.

Their reasons help future contributors understand the decision and recognize when conditions have changed. A short alternatives section can prevent repeated debates and accidental reversal of deliberate choices.
