How to Write Effective Resume Bullet Points

Structure bullets around action, context, and a specific outcome or deliverable.

How to Write Effective Resume Bullet Points

A resume bullet should carry one clear idea. Start with what you did, give enough context to understand it, and close with a result when one is known. This structure makes the point easier to scan and easier to discuss in an interview.

What to do

  • Choose active verbs that match your contribution. “Designed” and “implemented” describe different work; use the one you can defend. Avoid repeating the same verb for every bullet.

  • Include relevant context such as the product, audience, constraint, or tool. Leave out implementation detail that would need a long explanation before the reader sees its value.

  • Edit for length. Split a bullet that describes two unrelated achievements and remove filler phrases such as “responsible for” or “worked closely with” when they hide your action.

Example

“Tested payment error states with Playwright and fixed three broken checkout paths before launch” is clearer than “Responsible for testing and quality assurance.”

Every bullet should answer at least one useful question: what did you build, solve, change, deliver, or learn?
