What Is an Applicant Tracking System (ATS)?

An applicant tracking system is software an organization may use to receive and manage job applications. Different products and employers configure these systems differently. Some extract text from uploaded resumes into application fields; recruiters may also review the original file. There is no single trick that guarantees a resume will pass every system.

What to do

• Use clear, recognizable headings and ordinary text for essential details. This can help both software parsing and human review.

• Match relevant language from the job description when it truthfully describes your experience. Repeating a term many times without evidence does not improve the underlying application.

• After uploading, inspect any fields populated by the system. Correct missing dates, scrambled experience, or incorrect contact information before completing the application.

Example

If a role asks for “SQL,” include SQL in a skills or project entry when you have used it. Do not add it only because a scanner might search for the word.

Write for clear communication first, then verify the version the application system actually received.
