How to Use Spacing and White Space on a Resume

Balance readable text, section separation, and page length without wasting space.

How to Use Spacing and White Space on a Resume

White space is part of the information design. It separates ideas and reduces the effort needed to scan a page. Too little space makes entries run together; too much can hide a small amount of content across several pages. Adjust spacing after the wording is reasonably complete.

What to do

  • Use consistent gaps between sections and smaller gaps between entries within the same section. This tells readers which details belong together.

  • Keep line spacing comfortable and avoid squeezing text to meet an arbitrary page target. Edit repetitive bullets before reducing margins or font size.

  • Review the page at normal zoom and on a phone-sized screen. Make sure headings remain attached to the content they introduce and no single line is stranded at a page break.

Example

A large gap between a role title and its bullets can make them seem unrelated. Reduce that gap while preserving a clearer separation before the next role.

Use spacing to explain structure, not merely to fill or empty a page.
