Resume Layout Basics: Make Information Easy to Scan

Use headings, alignment, spacing, and visual hierarchy to improve resume readability.

Resume Layout Basics: Make Information Easy to Scan

A resume layout should guide the reader through your evidence. Consistent spacing and alignment make it easier to understand where one role ends and another begins. A visually elaborate design is not automatically more readable, particularly when important text becomes small or hard to locate.

What to do

  • Make your name, section headings, role titles, employers, and dates visually distinct. Keep the order and style of repeated entries consistent.

  • Use enough white space to separate sections without creating large blank areas. Check the page at normal viewing size, not only while zoomed in in an editor.

  • Keep essential information as selectable text where possible. Some application systems may have trouble with text embedded in images or unusual layout structures.

Example

If the employer name is bold in one entry and the job title is bold in the next, the reader must relearn the layout. Pick one pattern and apply it throughout.

Ask a friend to find your most recent role and strongest project; if it takes effort, simplify the visual hierarchy.
