How to Build a Resume as a Student

A student resume should show evidence of learning applied to real tasks. Coursework can provide context, but projects, internships, research, and student activities often tell a clearer story. The order can change depending on which experience is strongest for the target role.

What to do

Lead with your degree and expected graduation when those are important to the posting. Include a short list of relevant coursework only if it strengthens the application.
Explain class projects in the same concrete way as other work: the problem, your part, tools, and deliverable. Do not present group work as solely your own.
Include student clubs or volunteering when you managed budgets, built tools, coordinated events, or practiced other relevant skills. Give dates and scope.

Example

“Built a survey dashboard in a four-person capstone team; implemented data cleaning and interactive filters” shows a specific contribution.

Choose evidence that suggests you can do the entry-level tasks in the job description. A modest but complete project with a clear explanation can be more persuasive than an ambitious title without a working result.
