How to Write a Resume With No Work Experience
No paid job history does not mean you have nothing to show. Coursework, volunteer work, open-source contributions, competitions, and independent projects can all demonstrate useful skills. Describe what you personally did and what the work produced rather than apologizing for the absence of a formal role.
What to do
-
Start with a target role and its required skills. Choose two or three experiences that give evidence for those requirements. Move the most relevant section near the top.
-
For each project, include its purpose, your contribution, tools, and a working result or deliverable. A team project should distinguish your part from the group's work.
-
Treat volunteering and student leadership as experience when they involved real responsibilities. Give dates and outcomes, but do not invent a company title for unpaid or academic work.
Example
“Coordinated weekly registration for a college event with 120 attendees and resolved scheduling conflicts” describes transferable organization work.
A specific project or responsibility is stronger than a broad claim that you are hardworking.
