How to List Education on a Resume
Education establishes your academic background, but its prominence depends on your experience. Students and recent graduates may put it near the top. People with substantial relevant work experience may keep it shorter and lower on the page. Include what the role needs, not every course you have ever taken.
What to do
-
List the qualification, institution, and dates in a consistent format. If you are still studying, use an expected completion date only when you can reasonably estimate it.
-
Add relevant coursework, a dissertation, or a capstone project when it helps demonstrate job-related knowledge. Remove these details once stronger work evidence fills the space.
-
Include grades or awards when they are accurate and useful for the application. Do not mislabel an incomplete qualification as a completed degree.
Example
“B.Tech in Computer Science, XYZ Institute, 2022–2026 (expected). Capstone: inventory forecasting dashboard” communicates more than a degree title alone.
Make education easy to verify and keep it proportionate to its relevance to the job. When experience becomes your stronger evidence, shorten coursework rather than leaving old classes at the top indefinitely.
