How to Format Dates on a Resume
Dates help a reader understand when and for how long you did a piece of work. Consistency matters more than choosing one special date style. A confusing timeline can distract from your experience, especially when short contracts, internships, and overlapping projects appear together.
What to do
-
Pick one format, such as “Jun 2023–Aug 2024,” and use it for every role. Use “Present” only for work that is still ongoing.
-
Check that start and end dates are correct and that overlapping roles are understandable. A part-time internship or freelance project may reasonably overlap with study or another role.
-
For education, distinguish graduation from expected graduation. For short projects, a year may be enough if precise months are not useful.
Example
“Jan 2025–Present” and “2022–2024” can coexist, but one consistent level of detail across comparable jobs makes a timeline easier to scan.
Do not stretch dates to hide a gap; explain the timeline accurately if asked. When several short assignments happened in one period, grouping them under an accurately labeled freelance or contract role may improve clarity.
