How to List Freelance Work on a Resume

Freelance work is valid experience when it involved real clients and deliverables. The challenge is presenting multiple short engagements without making the timeline difficult to follow. You can group related projects under one freelance role or list major clients separately when permission and relevance allow.

What to do

Use an accurate title such as Freelance Designer or Independent Developer with the correct date range. Identify major engagements through bullets or subentries.
Explain the client problem and what you delivered. Share metrics only when you have permission and can verify them. Protect confidential client information.
Distinguish paid client work from personal projects. Both can be valuable, but labeling them accurately helps a reader understand your experience.

Example

“Independent Web Developer, 2024–Present: built booking pages for two local businesses and documented content updates for staff” gives useful scope without naming private clients.

Make the work easy to verify and discuss while respecting client confidentiality. When you cannot name the client, describe the industry and deliverable at a level your agreement permits.
