When to Add Certifications to a Resume

Select certifications that are relevant, current, and easy to verify.

When to Add Certifications to a Resume

A certification can support an application when it covers a skill the employer needs or is explicitly requested. It should not crowd out stronger evidence from real work. Certificates of attendance and assessed credentials communicate different things, so describe each accurately.

What to do

  • Include the credential name, issuing organization, and completion date. Add an identifier or verification link when appropriate and safe to share.

  • Prioritize credentials related to the target role. A cloud certification may belong on an infrastructure resume, while an unrelated short course may not add value.

  • Check expiry dates and version names. If a certification has lapsed, do not present it as current. Consider describing the training as coursework if that better reflects what you completed.

Example

“AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner — Amazon Web Services, 2025” is a specific credential. “Expert in cloud” is a claim that needs separate supporting evidence.

A relevant certification complements experience; it does not substitute for an explanation of what you can do. If you used the training in a project, connect the credential to that applied work.
