How to Choose a Font for a Resume

Select readable resume typography and check that it renders correctly in the final PDF.

How to Choose a Font for a Resume

A good resume font helps the reader focus on content. Familiar serif and sans-serif faces can both work; the important factors are readability, consistent use, and reliable rendering. A font that looks polished in your editor may substitute on another device if it is not available or embedded in the exported document.

What to do

  • Choose one primary typeface and use weight and size to establish hierarchy. Multiple decorative fonts can make the page feel inconsistent.

  • Keep body text comfortably readable at normal zoom. If you must make it very small to fit, edit content or spacing first.

  • Export a PDF and open it on another device or viewer. Check special characters, bullets, dates, and links for unexpected changes.

Example

A clear body font with slightly larger section headings is usually enough to create hierarchy; novelty lettering in every heading adds little information.

Judge the final exported resume, not only the editing preview. Check the smallest body text, the contrast of lighter labels, and whether bold text remains distinct after export and printing.
