What makes an application an AI application?

Understand where AI fits inside a product and how model capabilities work alongside ordinary application code.

What makes an application an AI application?

An AI application uses an AI capability to help its users accomplish a task. That capability might generate a script, recognize speech, classify a document, or recommend relevant information. The important question is what the AI contributes to the user's experience.

Find the part that needs AI

Consider a simplified video-creation tool. A model might turn a topic into a draft script, and a speech model might produce narration. A form that collects the topic, a button that downloads the video, and a page listing saved projects can all use ordinary application code.

Mapping these responsibilities helps you avoid sending every decision to a model. Checking whether a required field is empty or whether a user owns a project should follow explicit rules.

Distinguish the product from the development process

Using an AI coding assistant to build a calculator does not automatically make that calculator an AI application. The assistant helped the developer, but the calculator may still perform fixed arithmetic without any model involved at runtime.

Conversely, an application written entirely by a human can use a model to summarize documents. The product's behavior and the method used to build it are separate choices.

Look beyond the model response

A useful application also needs input validation, saved state, understandable feedback, and a way to handle unsuitable output. If a generated script is inaccurate, the user needs an opportunity to correct it before it becomes narration.

For your project brief, list the main features and label each as model-assisted or rule-based. For every model-assisted feature, write what the model receives, what it should return, and how the application will check or review that result.

No. The development process may use AI while the finished website uses only conventional logic. An AI product makes an AI capability part of the user's experience.

Yes. A focused capability, such as drafting a script for review, can be valuable when it solves a clear problem within a reliable workflow.

No. Enforce access with authenticated identity, stored ownership, and explicit authorization rules in the application.
