What is vectorization in artificial intelligence?
Vectorization is the process of representing information as an ordered collection of numbers called a vector. It lets machine-learning systems apply numerical operations to text, images, categories, and other inputs. The representation chosen determines which properties the system can use easily.
Start with a small feature example
Suppose a toy system describes a message using three features: its word count, its number of links, and whether it contains an attachment. A message could become the vector [24, 2, 1]. Each position has a specified meaning, so changing the feature order without updating the model would change the input interpretation.
Text can also be represented by counts of vocabulary terms. Such representations are often sparse: most entries are zero because a single document contains only a small part of the vocabulary.
Learned vectors offer another approach
An embedding is a learned representation commonly used to encode useful relationships in fewer, dense numerical dimensions. Its coordinates usually do not have simple human labels such as “number of links.” Instead, the values are optimized to support a training objective.
Vectorization is therefore broader than embedding generation. Handcrafted features, one-hot encodings, term-frequency features, and neural embeddings are different ways to turn information into numerical form.
Match the representation to the task
For a spam classifier, link frequency might be useful. For searching documents by meaning, a suitable text embedding may capture relationships that raw counts miss. Neither choice is universally best. Evaluate whether the representation preserves the distinctions your application needs, including negation, unusual terminology, and important numerical details.
No. A vector is any ordered collection of numbers. Embeddings are a particular kind of representation, usually learned to capture relationships useful for a task.
The dimension is the number of numerical components in the vector. More dimensions allow a different representation capacity but do not automatically guarantee better results.
A model interprets each position according to its training setup. Swapping positions can turn a word count into a link count and produce incorrect behavior.
