Does ChatGPT retrieve information from a database or generate it?
Distinguish a language model's generated text from database retrieval, web search, and retrieval-augmented generation in an assistant application.
Does ChatGPT retrieve information from a database or generate it?
ChatGPT generates text using a language model, and an assistant application can also retrieve information through enabled tools. These are complementary operations, not mutually exclusive explanations of every response.
The key distinction is between the underlying model and the larger application around it.
What the language model contributes
Training adjusts numerical parameters so that the model can produce useful continuations from context. Those parameters are not a conventional database containing one verified record for every question.
A model may answer a common question from learned patterns without consulting an external source during that interaction. It can also reproduce memorized material in some cases, but that does not make ordinary generation equivalent to a database lookup.
What retrieval contributes
A retrieval system locates existing information, such as a document passage or a database record. The application can include that material in the model's context and ask it to produce an answer.
For example, a support assistant might retrieve the relevant return-policy paragraph, then explain how it applies to a user's question. The retrieval step finds the evidence; generation turns it into a response.
This combination is called retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG. OpenAI's accuracy guide describes adding retrieved context before generating an answer.
Ask which evidence supports this answer
A response based on search may include citations. A response based only on learned patterns may have no inspected source behind a particular claim.
Neither path guarantees correctness. Retrieval can return irrelevant or outdated material, and a model can misread a correct passage. Check the supporting information when a specific fact matters.
No. Training changes model parameters, while a search index organizes retrievable records. Access to recent information generally requires supplying it in context or through a tool.
It adds a step that finds relevant material and provides it to the model. The model then generates an answer using that additional context.
Yes. A model may combine its learned language patterns with newly retrieved material. The application should make supporting sources clear when factual traceability matters.
