"What are your salary expectations?"
Sample: "Based on my research for this role and level, I am looking at a range of X to Y. I am happy to discuss the specifics after I understand the full scope and total compensation."
"What is your current salary?"
This is tricky. You can share if required, but frame the conversation around your target, not your current. "My current is X, but I am focused on the market rate for this role, which based on my research is in the range of Y to Z."
"Why should we pay you X?"
Sample: "Based on my skills in [specific tech], my projects, and market data from Levels.fyi, X is in line with this role. I will also bring [specific value], which I am happy to discuss in detail."
"We cannot go above X. Is that acceptable?"
Sample: "Thank you for being clear. Could we look at the total package, including signing bonus, equity, and benefits? Sometimes there is more room there even when base has limits."
"Do you have any competing offers?"
Be honest. If yes: "I have another offer at Y, and I would prefer this role. Can we get closer to that?" If no: "I am in active interviews, but I am focused on the role and the fit here, not just the highest number."
