FoodLoop — Zero-Waste Community Food Sharing App
A hyperlocal platform where restaurants, home cooks, grocery stores, and individuals share surplus food instead of wasting it. Connects food donors with receivers including NGOs, low-income families, or anyone nearby looking for free food. Built around the idea that surplus food is not waste, it is a resource waiting to reach the right person.
The Problem It Solves
- India wastes 68 million tonnes of food every year while 200 million people sleep hungry
- Restaurants and households have no easy way to donate surplus food before it expires
- NGOs and food banks have no real-time visibility into what food is available nearby
- Existing donation drives are offline, infrequent, and poorly coordinated
- No platform combines real-time food listing, proximity discovery, and pickup coordination in one place
Tech Stack
- Frontend: React Native (iOS and Android), Expo
- Backend: Node.js, Express.js
- Database: MongoDB (listings, users, donations, pickups, impact data)
- Auth: Google OAuth and phone number OTP via Firebase Auth
- Maps: Google Maps API for proximity-based food discovery and directions
- Real-time: Firebase Realtime Database for live listing updates and in-app chat
- Notifications: Firebase Cloud Messaging for new listings nearby and pickup confirmations
- Storage: Cloudinary for food listing photos
- Deployment: Firebase Hosting (frontend web version), Google Cloud Run (backend), MongoDB Atlas (DB)

Why This Project Stands Out
- Solves one of India's most visible social problems with a tech-first approach
- Real-time location features, chat, push notifications, and offline mode together cover advanced mobile development concepts
- Strong social impact narrative makes it stand out in interviews and hackathons
- Clear path from side project to NGO partnership to government collaboration
- Unique because it is not just another food delivery app, it targets waste reduction and community welfare
