Can the same token ID mean different things in different models?

Yes. IDs belong to a particular vocabulary. The same integer may refer to unrelated text in another tokenizer, so the matching tokenizer is essential.

More FAQs in What is a token ID?

No. The integer identifies a vocabulary entry. Its numerical size does not reliably express complexity, frequency, semantic similarity, or importance to the generated answer.

Ordinary parameter training can modify embeddings and other weights without changing the vocabulary indices. Changing a tokenizer’s vocabulary is a separate operation that requires model compatibility.
